California legal input regarding employment and criminal records of a minor?

Hi. I am 18 year old and live in California. As a juvenile, I have been convicted of a felony for possession of brass knuckles along with a misdemeanor for vehicular vandalism. By my understanding, On june 25th (18th birthday june 27th) I was to be released from probation and records were to be expunged. However, restitution was an unjust amount and I therefor challenged it with a public defender. The victim cannot be present to testify until July 30th which is now the next set court-date. I’ve been actively applying myself as a better person and have an optimistic outlook on my future. I have applied for many jobs and have been checking the “No” box when asked about prior felonies. Is this legally correct of me? I have been informed by a teacher that employers are not legally allowed to ask about juvenile convictions. Ive believed this for awhile but in lieu of a background check for a promising employment opportunity I find myself worried..
